Consumer hand-soap reviews treat lather, fragrance and moisture as the deciding factors. Shop work adds four criteria those reviews skip entirely:

After 30 or 40 washes with a petrosolvent soap, you will see cracking at the knuckles by mid-week. Cracked skin is a dermal exposure pathway — the last thing you want in a shop full of chemicals.

The criteria, scored
Solvent-free
Power One Soap contains zero petroleum solvents. Gojo Natural Orange and Fast Orange both use citrus-derived petroleum solvents (d-limonene + petroleum distillates) as their primary degreasers — effective on fresh grease, but the petrosolvent load is the reason both products carry repeated "may cause skin irritation with prolonged use" notices on the SDS. Worx and D-Solv go heavier still — solvent-dominant formulas built for extreme industrial cleanup, not daily skin contact. OSHA 29 CFR 1910.141(d)(2)(iii) says only that “hand soap or similar cleansing agents shall be provided” — a floor, not a formula standard. The regulation grades nothing about skin impact, so that argument is ours to make on the merits rather than a compliance point.
Scrubber type
Pumice-based soaps (Gojo Natural Orange, Fast Orange, Lava bar) use real pumice — Mohs hardness 6, irregular fracture edges. Pumice cuts through the heaviest shop grease in one pass. The 400 mL bottle is the outlier at $0.149 a wash. It is a trial and convenience size, and at shop volume it is the wrong thing to buy.
Skin impact
